Forum for Legal Protection of Women Victims of Violence, 15-16th of June 2017

In the frames of the USAID’s Women's Legal Protection Project in the period 15-16 June 2017, in Gevgelija a Forum for Legal Protection of Women Victims of Violence was held. The event was attended by Presidents and judges from the Basic Courts, a judge of the Court of Appeal, the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, the Ministry of Justice and the relevant institutions that have a legal mandate to deal with cases of violence against women. The forum was also attended by USAID representatives and organizations with whom ESE cooperates in the implementation of this project, Open Gate (La Strada), Coalition for Sexual and Health Rights of Marginalized Communities and Coalition All for Fair Trial.

The Forum was organized in order to open a wider discussion and define recommendations for the improvement of the existing laws in this field, as well as to improve the performance of the institutions involved in the system of protection, such as the Basic Court,  Basic Public Prosecutors, Centers for Social Welfare, police. For this purpose, the participants in the forum were presented with the main findings from the Analysis of the legal framework and institutional proceedings in cases related to violence against women, as well as the Analysis from the two-year court monitoring on cases related to domestic violence, trafficking in women and sexual violence. The identified deficiencies at the level of legal regulation, as well as the implementation gaps on the level of individual proceedings of the relevant ministries and institutions were discussed in detail by judges and other professionals working with women victims of violence, and specific recommendations were proposed for their overcoming.

Upon completing the forum, the recommendations will be finalized and will be submitted to the relevant ministries for further adoption. It is important to note that the USAID’s Women’s Legal Protection Projectpromotes an bottom-up approach that engages the practitioners in decision-making processes, that is, judges and other professionals from institutions have the opportunity to directly engage in the processes of changing and supplementing the existing legal framework for protection of women human rights.

USAID’s Women’s Legal Protection Projectwas realized by the Association for Emancipation, Solidarity and Equality of Women - ESE in cooperation with Open Gate - LA Strada and the Coalition for Sexual and Health Rights of Marginalized Communities. The general goal of this project is to enhance the level of legal protection for women victims of violence. In this regard the project aims to improve the court proceedings in cases related to violence against women, to promote the legal framework for protection of victims of violence and to strengthen the capacities of civil society organizations that provide legal aid to women victims of violence.
