World Trends in Freedom of Expression & Media Development - World Press Freedom Day - End Violence Against Journalists - Gender

IFJ – International Federation of Journalists - http://www.ifj.org/nc/news-single-view/backpid/1/article/ifj-urges-world-governments-to-back-a-proposal-for-a-ground-breaking-convention-on-journalists-pr/

On May 3, World Press Freedom Day, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) says that the recent spike in violence targeting journalists is a stark reminder that there can be no press freedom when journalists live and work in fear. The IFJ has recorded 32 journalists and media staff killed so far in 2018, with a chilling ratio of two journalists killed every week. The IFJ believes that the safety crisis in media calls for global action against impunity for crime against journalists and is urging world governments to commit to defending press freedom by endorsing the IFJ’s proposal for an International Convention on the safety and independence of journalists and other media professionals.

Across the world, journalism is under fire. While more individuals have access to content than ever before, the combination of political polarization and technological change have facilitated the rapid spread of hate speech, misogyny and unverified 'fake news', often leading to disproportionate restrictions on freedom of expression. In an ever-growing number of countries, journalists face physical and verbal attacks that threaten their ability to report news and information to the public.

In the face of such challenges, this new volume in the World Trends in Freedom of Expression and Media Development series offers a critical analysis of new trends in media freedom, pluralism, independence and the safety of journalists. With a special focus on gender equality in the media, the report provides a global perspective that serves as an essential resource for UNESCO Member States, international organizations, civil society groups, academia and individuals seeking to understand the changing global media landscape.
