EU Family Unpaid Care - Challenges for Mothers - The European Care Strategy Issues

Make Mothers Matter: MMM - Unpaid family care work is indispensable. Yet it is not recognized, not valued, and generates poverty and discrimination. Given that the responsibility for doing unpaid care work falls disproportionately on women and girls, this is particularly damaging to them. Globally, women do three times more the unpaid care work done by men, and up to more than five times in poor, rural areas. This trend is likely to increase as women are expected to do the lion’s share of care for an ageing global population.

In these unprecedented times, when Europe is navigating a global pandemic, when political tensions are boiling over threatening to destabilize the global order, it is vital to reflect on the people who hold the fabric of society together. The pandemic has shone a light on the front-line workers, who continue to save lives every day, even if it means risking their own. Many of these workers are mothers, but for them, care work does not end at the hospital or nursing home.

Gender equality, and the empowerment and full enjoyment of human rights by all women and girls are universal goals in their own right. They were set out in Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, in the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), and in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. They are also essential for leaving no one behind, and for economic growth and sustainable development……..Building a body of evidence demonstrating the achievement of gender equality can help increase political will to focus on, and increase investments in this goal.

Women, Business & The Law 2022

Direct Link to 8-Page 2022 World Bank Executive Summary:

Women, Business and the Law 2021 (worldbank.org)

Women, Business and the Law 2022 is the eighth in a series of annual studies measuring the laws and regulations that affect women's economic opportunity in 190 economies. The project presents eight indicators structured around women's interactions with the law as they move through their careers: Mobility, Workplace, Pay, Marriage, Parenthood, Entrepreneurship, Assets, and Pension. Amid a global pandemic that threatens progress toward gender equality, 'Women, Business and the Law 2022' identifies barriers to women's economic participation and encourages reform of discriminatory laws. This year, the study also includes pilot research related to childcare and implementation of the law. By examining the economic decisions women make throughout their working lives, as well as the pace of reform over the past 50 years, Women, Business and the Law makes an important contribution to research and policy discussions about the state of women's economic empowerment. The indicators build evidence of the critical relationship between legal gender equality and women's employment and entrepreneurship. Data in 'Women, Business and the Law 2022' are current as of October 1, 2021.

The State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 (fao.org)

Global hunger levels are rising, and the food security gap between women and men continues to widen, a new UN report warns. Nearly 10 percent of the world’s population – more than 800 million people – were hit by hunger last year, according to the annual State of Food Security and Nutrition report. There has been a backslide during the COVID-19 pandemic – the proportion of people affected by hunger had been about 8 percent and holding in 2019. The gender gap is also expanding: A greater proportion of women than men went hungry last year. The climate crisis, conflicts, economic shocks, and inequality are threatening global goals to end hunger and malnutrition by 2030.
