People are living longer, and that trend is expected to continue. Longevity gives older adults both an opportunity and a need to continue working. This means that the fastest growing population – and labor force – segment is people over 55). At the same time, the birth rate is falling, and there are not enough younger people to replace older people as they leave the workplace). This trend coincides with other constraints on the labor market, including losses due to the pandemic, reduced immigration, and lower productivity. Age-friendly employers recognize the value and prioritize the contributions of all employees, regardless of age. And they act to create equity, inclusivity and belonging in their hiring and retention policies and practices for older workers.
