In the World Justice Project Rule of Law Index 2024, North Macedonia scored 0.62 in Fundamental Rights, ranking 2nd in the region and 53rd globally. This category assesses the protection of individual rights, including life and security, freedom of expression, and labor rights. Here are the key highlights:

1. Right to Life and Security: North Macedonia received a score of 76, reflecting a generally safe environment for citizens, with strong protections against violent acts and security threats.

2. Freedom of Expression: Scoring 55, this shows partial freedom for the press and individuals. However, there are occasional reports of media and civil society facing restrictions or intimidation, limiting the full realization of free expression.

3. Labor Rights: With a score of 60, labor rights are somewhat respected, though challenges remain in fully aligning these rights with international standards on wages, workplace safety, and anti-discrimination practices.

Summary:

North Macedonia demonstrates a strong commitment to fundamental rights, particularly in ensuring safety and labor rights for its citizens. However, freedom of expression, especially for the media and civil society, requires further reinforcement to guarantee a truly free and independent press. Strengthening protections for journalists and labor rights will be crucial in advancing these fundamental rights.

Looking at neighboring countries such as Slovenia, where similar media challenges have been addressed through regulatory models, North Macedonia could benefit from adopting more robust protections for press freedom and improving labor rights enforcement.
